Hochiki Europe’s new operations director targets automation and lean manufacturing

Hochiki Europe has appointed Roland Martin-Bessey as its new operations director.

Martin-Bessey, whose CV includes roles at ASSA ABLOY, Ernst & Young and Dyson, is tasked with boosting production efficiency and supply chain capabilities across the life safety systems manufacturer.

Martin-Bessey’s appointment is a key plank of a £1million investment in its operations.

Martin-Bessey will hope to get the most out of Hochiki Europe’s recent upgrade of its production line and manufacturing equipment at its UK factory in Kent.

Hochiki Europe reports that innovative procedures already introduced by Martin-Bessey have improved delivery, reduced lead times and made manufacturing a more resilient process.

One example cited is the introduction of surface-mount technology for the manufacture of Hochiki Europe’s printed circuit boards. Micro-components are consequently installed more rapidly, with greater precision and efficiency, claims the company.

It also says Martin-Bessey has already overseen improvements to the UK on time delivery (OTD) rates, with February’s rate exceeding 98%.

One of his next priorities is expanding the company’s automation and lean manufacturing capabilities.

Martin-Bessey believes operational improvements must be planned with the customer foremost in mind. “There are a number of ways in which manufacturers can grow operational effectiveness, but the true value of these processes can only be measured by the customer.

“The customer is the end point in the supply chain, and if we at Hochiki Europe are to manage this journey successfully, we have to understand what the customer wants. That is why we are listening to them more closely than ever before, and building our enhanced operations models around their requirements, including readily-available stock and timely delivery.”

The operations team also has a new procurement manager: Elliott Purse, who brings to Hochiki Europe more than a decade of experience in procurement, acquired at specialist manufacturers like Amphenol LTD and McLaren Automotive.

Gavin Molde, an experienced supply chain project manager with a background in telecoms, joins as supply chain and logistics manager.
