To ensure interoperability between different manufacturers of IP security devices, Axis, Bosch, and Sony founded an organization in 2008 called ONVIF. ONVIF stands for Open Network Video Interface Forum, and serves as an open standard forum. Until January 2019, 479 members joined the organization including manufacturers, system integrators, consultants, and software vendors.

ONVIF defines several standards called Profiles that aim to standardize communication between IP-based physical security products. Devices that indicate conformity with ONVIF profiles can work together. The Profiles issued till date are Profile A, C, G, Q, S, and T. Profiles A and C describe standards for access control systems, while Profiles G, Q, S, and T describe standards for video surveillance systems.
