FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — The next installment of the SSI Industry Hall of Fame Educational Webinar Series will feature Ken Kirschenbaum explaining the opportunity for security dealers to expand into DIY products and services, with particular attention given to the legal issues inherent to participating in this growing market.
Kirschenbaum, who pens SSI’s “Legal Briefing” column, is recognized throughout the United States as an expert in the alarm industry for licensing, contract forms, defense litigation and transactional matters.
His standardized contract forms are used by thousands of alarm companies in the United States and internationally. He is engaged by insurance carriers to defend alarm cases and to supervise defense work throughout the U.S.
Within the New York metropolitan area, Kirschenbaum is well regarded as one of the longest-serving United States Bankruptcy Trustees in the Eastern District of New York — a position that affords a unique perspective on many areas of law. He was inducted into the SSI Industry Hall of Fame in 2009 in recognition for his distinguished service to the industry.
During the free March 21 (2 p.m. EDT) webcast, Kirschenbaum will provide an overview of the DIY model and how it compares to a traditional security dealer business model. Among the topics he will discuss is the potential to operate without the need for an installation or service staff.

Other DIY model topics will include operational matters such as warehousing and how equipment suppliers will drop ship for you, and staffing in-house operators to take orders by telephone or over the Internet.
Among the many legal considerations, Kirschenbaum will explain:
- If providing equipment only
- If engaging in DIY monitoring
- Licensing concerns pertaining to both monitoring and installation
- Telemarketing regulations
- Warranty coverage
